ATTIC REMODELING IN YOUR HOME

How to Make the Most out of Your Home
More and more of us work from home, and it is important to be able to make the most out of your home in a cost effective way. Creating a home office is one way of doing so, but to make the most out of the space available, you may want to make your work space multifunctional.

It used to be very popular to convert the attic in a house to an extra room, but we seem to have moved away from doing so. Perhaps it is about time we looked at this option again. This is after all a very cost effective way to make the most out of your home, and can make a great home addition.

Remodeling basics for an attic room

Once you start looking around your attic you might be pleasantly surprised. Most attics are well insulated, and it may after all not be too difficult to get started. This can also be a quick and easy project to complete, and you may be able to do a lot of the work yourself or hire a house remodeling contractor.

However, there are a few basics which you need to consider before your go ahead and start your attic remodeling project:

  • Floor
  • Light
  • Access
  • Water Supply
  • Heating and electricity
  • Ceiling

Attic Floor

Not all attic floors are finished off. You may be dealing with floor boards which have never been nailed down, or some attics don't have any floor boards at all. Of course, without flooring you are not going to be able use this part of your home.

Surprisingly, this is a very easy problem to fix, but there is one important point you may want to consider and that is sound proofing. Many of us forget about sound proofing when we start our home addition.

Whether you live in a single or two story house, you want to be able to sound proof your new space. You can buy specialist materials to do this but they are very expensive. In Sweden the Swedes have solved this problem in a simple but ingenious way. Being great lovers of recycling, they simple fill the floor space with news paper. Not only do news paper create an excellent sound proof barrier but they also help to further insulate your home.

It is now even easy to lay new floor boards. There are many different types of kits available, and all you need to do is to work out your floor space. Many of the kits available are easy to use even if this is your first remodeling project.

Let there be light

It might be tempting to start considering putting in windows but have you ever considered a sky light or two. Not only do they provide beautiful natural light for you to work by, but they do it in such away that there may not be a great need for additional electrical appliances in the room.

Of course, installing sky lights might be a job for the professionals, so do consider using home improvement contractor to do this job.

Access

Having decent access to the attic is important as well. A lot of people do like to install a spiral staircase. They can look great but they can also be very expensive. Many home stores now also sell ready made staircases and you should take a look at this option. Some of them will even retract into the ceiling like a ladder.

The fixed ones are more convenient, and they are also a lot easier to install yourself. Having access permanently in place can be a great advantage, especially if you are working from home. Fixed access can also make a staircase feel a lot safer.

Water Supply

If you are planning to make the most out of your attic, you may want to consider installing a water supply as well. This could be another job for outside contractors as well, but it is often very inexpensive.

An extra bathroom makes a great home addition as well. You can now make your attic space dual purpose. It can be a great home office during the day, and an extra guest or family bedroom during the night. Guests will be able to enjoy their privacy on an entire floor of your house.

Make the most out of any ongoing sales, and buy what you need for your new bathroom when you can get the best discounts. Don't feel you need to finish off everything at once.

Heating and electricity

If you live in a colder climate, you should consider heating for your attic. You can opt for traditional radiators but you may need to get somebody in to make sure they are installed properly.

Heating appliances have come along way in recent years, and you can now buy wall panels which you just plug in. The great thing is that many of this panels can be painted and will form part of the decor.

A plug in heating panel only takes a few minutes to hang, and is no more difficult to hang than a painting. Not only that, but they are very cost effective to run.

Electricity is important as well, but before you make any radical decisions, you should check out which electricity points you may already have. Draw a simple plan of your attic space, and mark the electric points. Then simply plan your lay out accordingly.

Ceiling

Sometimes attic ceilings are a bit hit and miss, but they are easy to deal with once you have planned your electricity supply.

One way is to simply buy large wooden panels, paint them and fix them to the ceiling. Once again, you can take advantage of the Swedish idea of filling any empty spaces with news paper. The more insulation you have, the warmer your new living space will be.

An attic can so easily be turned into a functional part of the home. It is important to use your imagination, but it is a must to keep an eye on the cost of the project. Try to go for simple solutions which you can complete yourself.

Due diligence is a must before hiring a home remodeling contractor to avoid future headaches.
